Shopify said "Products Imported" and a product never arrived

A product with one malformed variant row can pass validation, count toward the preview, report success, and never appear in the store.

What you are seeing

The import banner says it worked. The product count went up by less than you expected, and one specific product is simply not there.

There is no error message for this one. That is the problem, not an omission on this page — the import reports success and the damage is only visible if you go looking for it.

Why it happens

The pre-validation modal does not catch everything it could. We built a file with two products, one of them carrying a bare continuation row missing its inventory policy and fulfillment service. It passed the modal, it was counted in the preview, the import reported "Products Imported" — and only the clean product exists in the store.

The discard unit is the PRODUCT, not the row. One deficient variant row does not lose you that variant; it loses you the whole product it belonged to. That is why the count can be off by more than the number of bad rows.

The same file, with the same omission on ALL of its products, is refused loudly at the modal. So whether you get an error or silence depends on whether any product in the file happens to be clean — which is not something you can predict from the error.

How to fix it

  1. Reconcile handles, not counts: list the distinct handles in your file and compare them against the handles in the store afterwards. The difference names the products you lost.
  2. Check that every variant row carries Variant Inventory Policy and Variant Fulfillment Service before you upload. That is the omission we reproduced.
  3. Treat a "Products Imported" banner as the beginning of the check, not the end of it.

Where this came from

We broke a real Shopify store on purpose to answer these questions, and kept what it said. Nothing on this page is quoted from documentation.

  • One product with a bare continuation row, in a file whose other product was clean, passed the pre-validation modal, counted toward the preview, reported "Products Imported" — and never arrived. Only the control exists.

What we did not measure. We reproduced this with one specific omission on one store. Other malformations may fail loudly where this one is silent — we did not enumerate them.

Observed 2026-09-04. The store this was measured on has since been deleted, so these answers are an archive rather than something we re-run — we would rather tell you the date than imply it is checked continuously.

Check your file before you upload it

The Pre-Flight Report reads your supplier file and names every blocker, with the row it is on, before you go near an importer. It is free, it needs no account, and it does not send your file to a model.
